Postal Museum

Balatonszemes

The Baroque building, built in the last quarter of the 18th century for stables on the Hunyady family's Balatonszemes estate, has been home to the Postal Museum's exhibitions since 1962. The permanent exhibition "From the Carriage to the Postal Car" in the former stable building presents a selection of the Postal Museum's vehicle collection.

Also linked to the history of the building, the exhibition traces the history of postal transport, from the 15th century wagon train to the more recent motorised postal car. Original and model vehicles, period postal uniforms, documents, photographs and maps, housed in a centuries-old stable building and a leg barn modelled on a typical Transdanubian farm building, invite visitors on a journey through postal history.

The beautifully landscaped courtyard is a fitting setting for the sculpture by the artist Ferenc Trischler, the Communications Memorial, which is the only one in Europe to commemorate the postmen, telecommunications and broadcasting workers who died in the recent and more distant past in the course of their messaging duties.
